Kirk Balk Academy set to enter ESFA National Cup

Schools football in England had its beginnings in the latter part of the 1900's. Local and regional competitions soon followed and the English Schools' Football Association (ESFA) was born.

As a former Head of PE and PE teacher, I always ensured that students in my schools competed in the ESFA Cup; a competition that is ran in exactly the same way as the actual FA cup that is extremely popular all over the world.

All secondary schools in the country are eligible to complete in the ESFA National Cup competitions. Some of them are amongst the biggest knock-out tournaments in the world with over 7000 secondary school teams competing last year!

As Head of Academy my intention to continue to grow our sporting ethos has been made clear. I firmly believe that competitions such as the ESFA Cup gives students the unique educational experience of competing against schools outside of the local district; with early round draws often taking students many miles away from home to play. This can be tremendously exciting and helps students build even stronger and deeper team working skills that I know will serve them well in later life.

Recently a colleague contacted us and provided us with an ESFA Match Day Programme for the U16 finals, which Kirk Balk jointly won! This was in 1986 and at the time, we were the champions of school boy football in England and this is my aspiration again! No other school in Barnsley has ever achieved this (the best I personally achieved with my teams in other Barnsley Schools was to reach the last 16 schools of all England)

This season we have entered local and county competitions but are hoping to enter a full suite of teams into next year's competitions. If you are interested in getting involved in football (boys and girls) or indeed then please speak to a member of our PE Staff. I am also interested in hearing from parents who would also like to be involved in some way.
