Barnsley Youth Council Elections

The Youth Voice and Participation Team has recently facilitated the Barnsley Youth Council Elections in partnership with Kirk Balk Academy and a fantastic 795 number of votes were received.

The we are proud to announce we have three elected Youth Councillors at Kirk Balk Academy.

Overall ten secondary schools, Springwell, Greenacre and Barnsley College participated and the results across the Borough show that a massive 9,152 young people voted in the election.

69 young people stood to take one of the 38 seats available.

The new Youth Council officially met last week to begin their 2 year term of office.

They have a busy year ahead and already have lots of exciting work scheduled for 2017 such as work on the recent MYM result campaigns "Transport" and "A Curriculum to prepare us for life"

We have historically worked in partnership with schools and Barnsley College to support the elected Youth Councillors engage with their peers though drop in sessions at lunchtimes and after school and we have engaged them in various regional and national youth campaigns and consultations. This is something we are keen to continue this year as it is a large part of the elected Youth Councillors role to undertake their duties outside school and also fulfil some tasks within school time to ensure that they are engaging with their constituents and obtain a variety of views and opinions on local, regional and national youth voice issues.
