Y7 Students visit the University of Sheffield for Chemistry Carousel

On the 13th June 25 Year 7 students visited the University of Sheffield to get a taste of what life is like as a student and to visit the Chemistry Labs to take part in a carousel of experiments. Firstly they learned about Sir Harry Kroto and the work he did whilst at the University of Sheffield on allotropes of carbon- in particular the Buckminsterfullerene (more commonly know as the Bucky Ball). Next, they looked at every day applications of Chemistry, making bath bombs, making slime and looking at the pH of every day items we find in our homes during sessions which were led by current PhD students, who were impressed by Kirk Balk students' practical skills. They then went on a treasure hunt led by current STEM students of the University, around the campus following clues to look for major land marks, e.g. the students' union, the Octagon, the halls of residence and the main lecture theatres. Our students couldn't believe how huge it is and how many opportunities there are!
