Welcome Back To School

Another exciting and inspiring academic year lies ahead. I'd like to wish an extra special welcome to our new Year 7 students. We are sure you will be happy at Kirk Balk Academy and will quickly feel part of our family.

This summer, the academy has been celebrating being the most improved school by some distance in terms of student attainment in Barnsley. A staggering 73% of students achieved a pass in both English and Maths and results in all other subjects showed strong improvements. This is a clear indication of how well we are doing and the significant improvements that have been made over the past few years.

Our most recent Year 11 students really deserved their excellent GCSE examination results and we are confident that, with your continued support, our current students will do even better this time around as we continue on our journey to become an outstanding academy. I would like to especially ask the parents and carers of our current students to support the academy in ensuring that they attend and engage in all of the extra intervention sessions that will be made available this year; these can most definitely make the difference and we want nothing more than for all of our students to achieve their full potential. Please note that these intervention sessions form only a small part of our 'Enrichment' offer, which extends to all year groups; not just those in Year 11. Details of the sessions on offer will be made available on our website next week.

The start of a new academic year enables us to set the tone for learning and behaviour in the academy. It is an important time for teachers and students to establish classroom routines and to set expectations of behaviour and working well together. Please help us by ensuring children are in the academy by 8.20am at the latest (in preparation for 8.25am which is the first lesson), wearing the correct academy uniform and prepared to learn. This includes having with them their school bag and all necessary equipment for the day.

On our website you will find very detailed information about the academy including our uniform information and compulsory PE kit and indeed what students need to bring every day. In addition, we are clear about our stance on mobile phones, jewellery, make up and suitable footwear. If you are in any doubt whatsoever, then please do not hesitate to contact your child's relevant Learning Manager.

Our site team, in conjunction with the local council, have been incredibly busy over the summer holidays providing many improvements to the academy environment, including making some important changes to the footpath leading up to the academy. We will resume our duties to support our students in terms of their safe arrival and dismissal to school but as ever, please continue to drive slowly upon your approach to our site.

As ever this year we will continue to be 'outcomes focussed and child centred' and it is with this in mind that I'd like to reassure you that caring for your child is equally as important to us as ensuring they make excellent academic progress. To that end we operate a system of Learning Managers to ensure
